with Art Briles
Baylor head coach Art Briles delivered the speech and Houston Chronicle sportswriter John McClain, The General, (left) was the emcee of Baylor Day this year. Briles talked about getting a new stadium on campus, as Baylor is the only Big 12 school without a stadium on its campus. At right is Lamar High School head coach Tom Nolen, who talked about the TD Club's weight room project as well as how the TD Club put academic advisors on the campuses of the 23 Houston ISD schools with athletics and how that has almost tripled the graduation rates of student-athletes at those high schools.
LSU head coach Les Miles, right, talked to the audience during the LSU Dinner, employing a "chalk talk," where Miles showed film of the spring football game and talked about positions and depth. Houston was one of the stops on the annual Tiger Tour. The audience, left, drank in the presentation like only Cajuns can.
NFL Hall of Famer Kenny Houston of the Houston Oilers and the Washington Redskins was this year's Touchdowner of the Year honoree. His wife, Gustie, introduced Ken to the audience and she stole the show. Speaking on his behalf were fellow Hall of Famer Elvin Bethea (also listed as a fishing buddy to Kenny), former teammate Alvin Reed (who played against Kenny in high school and with Ken with the Oilers and Redskins), and Barry Warner, the former NFL scout who discovered Houston and currently is a KILT-AM talk show host. Also attending, at right, were former Touchdowner winners John David Crow (far right) who is Texas A&M's 1956 Heisman Trophy winner, and R.C. Slocum, the winningest football coach at A&M. In the left fo the photo are Diron and Don Talbot, who played football at the University of Texas, with Diron also playing at the Washington Redskins in the NFL.
Prairie View coach Henry Frazier III, left, receives a special award recognizing PVAMU's first football conference championship since 1964 from Lisa Nicks Elder, granddaughter of College Football Hall of Fame PVAMU coach Billy Nicks. At right, TSU coach Johnnie Cole rebuts some of the things that Frazier said during his time at the luncheon. Guest speaker was Alvin Reed, a former All-America end at PVAMU. Also speaking was TSU President Dr. John Rudley, with Ch. 11 sportscaster Butch Alsandor as emcee. TSU's Charles Green received an award for his community service in HISD. Green also started at quarterback for four years in a row in the 1970s.
