2008 Sterling Bank Sportsmanship Luncheon, presented by the FCA

Special speaker Joe DeLameilleure, a Pro Football Hall of Famer mostly with the Buffalo Bills, wowed the Sportsmanship Luncheon crowd with his funny stories about playing in the NFL. He was part of the "Electric Company" with the Bills who blocked for O.J. Simpson.
Channel 55's Todd Freed was emcee for the annual feel-good event, which named Deer Park High School as the winner of the 2008 Sportsmanship trophy. Todd won a Lone Star Emmy in 2007 for his high school sports coverage.

New LSU athletic director Joe Alleva introduced LSU coaches Van Chancellor and Les Miles at LSU Day, left, but had to wait on both as airplane problems prevented them from arriving on time from Baton Rouge. Fans got Miles, right, to sign memorabilia to commemorate the BCS national championship for 2007. The Tiger Athletic Foundation also brought the BCS national championship crystal football trophy that many fans had their pictures made with.

Bridgeway Capital Management Football Scholar-Athlete Luncheon

Dr. Charles Breithaupt, left, discussed timeless values with the 25 high school scholar-athlete finalists at the annual luncheon. Breithaupt came to the luncheon and spoke to area high school athletic directors the next day.

The top winner of the annual football scholar-athlete award was Brett Provenzano of Strake Jesuit, right, shown with his mom, Peggy, and dad, Charles. The 25 finalists had to be starters on their respective football teams with the highest GPAs.

PLAY IT SMART NEWS CONFERENCE -- The TD Club on May 7 announced with representatives of the National Football Foundation that the Play It Smart program will be placed in all 23 Houston ISD high schools with athletic programs. Attending the news conference are, from left, HISD athletic director Daryl Wade; HISD superintendent Abe Saavedra; Play It Smart executive director and National Football Foundation VP Len Stachitas of Dallas; Jim McIngvale of Gallery Furniture, who has created a TV ad on behalf of the TD Club to promote Play It Smart in Houston; and TD Club president Chad Clay.

Sherman joked that his wife told him a positive thing coming out this down season is that he "is losing weight." Doherty Long Wagner LLP Rice-UH Bayou Bucket Luncheon

UH coach Kevin Sumlin, left, and Rice coach David Bailiff eye the prize that is the Bayou Bucket. The TD Club created the Bayou Bucket in 1974 to award to the winning team of the annual contest on the field immediately after the contest. Both schools entered the contest with the West Conference title on the line in Conference USA.

Pearland's Jarrad Stewart, left, shown with TD Club Board member Keith Kilgore, won the annual Greater Houston High School Defensive Player of the Year Award. Russell Shepard of Cypress Ridge, right, won the Offensive Player of the Year Award.

 

ESPN's Ron Franklin, left, who formerly worked in Houston, was awarded the inaugural Ron Stone Award, given for his work on behalf of the sport of football. Hightower High School coach Shane Hallmark won the John Kelley Coach of the Year Award, and is shown, right, with John Kelley. Kelley is on the TD Club Board and began the High School Awards Dinner.

Atascocita won the award the first time it was a finalist. Former Ohio State head football coach John Cooper, right, wows the crowd with stories even a Michigander would have loved.
